Our terroir
Its northern geographical position, its harsh climatic conditions, the characteristics of its subsoil and its hillside location make it a special terroir, giving Champagne wines their unreplicable and unique typicity.
Hillside
The steep and hilly vineyard gives an ideal sunlight to the vines and its declivity facilitates the flow of excess water.
Soil
Our limestone soils where the chalk outcrops, promote drainage. This soil gives a particular minerality typical of our Champagne wines.
Climate
The Champagne terroir is distinguished by its geographical location on a northern latitude and by its dual climatic influence: oceanic and continental.
The Côte des Blancs, kingdom of Chardonnay.
The Côte des Blancs: a unique environment.
The hillside vineyards are mainly East and South-East oriented, which protects them from the West winds.
The unique feature of the Côte des Blancs is also its climate. Oceanic type with continental influence, it brings the sunlight, rainfall and temperatures favorable to the ideal development of Chardonnay.
The quality of the soil and subsoil are decisive for the vines. The soil of Champagne and the one from the Côte des Blancs especially, mostly chalky, brings the constituent elements of the personality of the Chardonnay. This soil allows a particular mineral nutrition by an optimal regulation of the hygrometry of the grounds.
On the top on the hillside vineyards, the soils contain more clay so these will produce reserve wines (used in the blends) that will sharpen and mature over the years. This soil diversity brings a true richness to the Côte des Blancs and highlights the savoir-faire of the Champagne wine-growers. Thanks to a perfect knowledge of their vines and their terroirs, they compose with the characteristics of each plot to make their Champagne.
The diversity of plots and micro-terroirs, a real richness.
The assemblage (blend), a perfect alchemy made possible thanks to the diversity of our terroirs.
The three main parameters – climate, soils, topography – create a specific combination but that can vary.
There is almost as many combinations as ares (100 sqm) in Champagne, a mosaic of micro-terroirs.
This diversity is usually distinguished at the Cru level but for us, winemakers, this is more on the single vineyard level. Each plot is identified and named for a long time.
They are worked by the winemaker to express the specifity of each one. The winemaker can then obtain wines that will express a certain typicity or make complementary and complimentary assemblages.
